Need a job search motivator to start your Monday? How about this quote:
The meeting of preparation with opportunity generates the offspring we call luck.
– Anthony Robbins
I believe we make our own luck. This is an important principle of life, and it especially applies to your job search in a variety of ways:
Your Network
When someone calls you to let you know about a perfect-fit job opening, it’s because you maintained your network of relationships so that they thought of you to let you know about it.
Make your own luck by actively growing and maintaining your network so you’re top of mind when someone hears about a job opening. Set a goal to contact a certain number of people this week, or today. Not sure how? Check out this blog post on 4 Easy Networking Tips.
Your Job Interviews
When you get the interview, it’s because you did a great job with your resume or you contacted the hiring manager to ask for the interview.
Most people don’t have a resume that does what it’s supposed to–act as a marketing document for you (because the job search is a sales process). Two of the most important improvements you can make to your resume are bullet points and quantification (describing your accomplishments in terms of numbers, dollars, or percentages). If your resume doesn’t have that, improve your odds of getting the interview by making those vital upgrades. Use our Extreme Resume Makeover Kit.
Contacting the hiring manager directly is so much more effective at securing interviews than submitting online application forms. Online applications don’t work. Only a small handful of them ever make it to the hiring manager. Make your own luck by sending it to them directly.
Not sure how to make that happen? See How to Find Unadvertised Jobs and Get Interviews.
Having an Outstanding Interview
When you have a killer interview, it’s because you took the time to prepare for that interview. I don’t think it’s possible to over-prepare for a job interview. Anything and everything you can find out beforehand will help you. so research the company thoroughly. Practice your answers to typical interview questions. Most importantly, create a 30-60-90-day plan.
The more information and preparation you have for your job search, the luckier you’ll be when opportunities arise.
I want to invite you to attend one of my free, live job search and interview webinars this week. They’re packed with insights and advice to prepare you, inform you, and inspire you.
