One of the important things you can do in your job search is maintain your confidence and positive thinking. That can be difficult if you’ve run into a lot of rejections already, but it’s important.
Try a technique that I use with my clients: Picture your job search as a hunt through a field of stones. If I told you that one of those stones was a diamond, you’d search through them with a lot of hope. You’d pick one up and if you saw that it wasn’t the diamond you’re looking for, you’d toss it behind you without thinking about it again. You’d just keep looking.
Your job is out there. You just have to keep looking until you find it.
If your job search isn’t going so great right now, you can change it. You can speed it up (so you get to your diamond faster) and you can be strategic so that the things you do have more effectiveness.
When you do that, your job search motivation remains high and you actually get a job faster.
For instance…you could apply for jobs for months and not get one single response. That is so common. Only a small fraction of online applications ever actually make it to the hiring manager’s desk–for a lot of reasons. It doesn’t have anything to do with your skill set, and yet it makes you feel like no one wants you.
Instead, speed it up and make sure you get to the hiring manager yourself. Stop applying for jobs and start contacting hiring managers directly. This is the person who can hire you.
