Be Different in Your Approach

It can be tempting to send a simple resume with a covering letter off to multiple employers. But this is guaranteed to look impersonal and it’s likely your paperwork will end up at the bottom of the pile. If you really want to catch a potential employer’s attention, think about making your resume slightly different. Think about the design, paper colour and font you have used. Also think about how much you have written for each section. Employers don’t have the time to spend reading your resume if it looks like an essay. Keep the design looking professional but play around with layout ideas and make your name look bright and bold. Use an online resume template or create it yourself. That way it will stick in their minds and they will appreciate the personal touches you’ve added. Always remember to tailor your resume to the role too–even though it may take you longer, its worth the additional effort.

Consider your Online Profiles

In this day and age, we are all obsessed with social media and your employer is no exception. It’s become common practice for employers to search for your name on a variety of social media sites. This research will show them about your lifestyle and how you enjoy spending your free time. Google yourself and see what comes up. You might be surprised what you find. Alter the privacy settings on your profiles and delete or hide anything that could be seen as unprofessional or distasteful. Try to keep motivational posts and images on your profile, as this will make a great impression. Shows examples of your work through photographs and links too. Think sensibly and consider what kind of things they might be looking for.

Practice Interviewing

Ask a trusted friend or family member to help you practise your interview techniques and this will help you combat nerves. Employers will be able to tell if you’re overly nervous so the more you practise, the more calm you will appear at the actual interview. Practice over the phone, individually and in a group scenario if you can, so you are prepared for any option your employer chooses. Also compile a list of questions you can ask at the interview as this will show initiative and interest in the company.

These tips should refresh your search and make you a more confident job hunter. Keep your eyes open for opportunities and don’t be afraid to get your name out there.
