5 Ways to Beat Age Bias in Your Job Search

Are you being passed over for jobs because you’re over 40 (or especially 50) and experiencing age bias? You’re not alone.

Most job seekers over 40 report at least some negative bias toward them in a job search. You may even be afraid you’ll have to take a step down (and the pay cut to go with it) in your next job…IF you can get hired at all.

Even though you suspect (or know) that age discrimination is keeping you from getting hired, it’s almost impossible to prove. Employers won’t tell you why they went with someone else…unless they tell you that “you’re overqualified.”

However, age bias is NOT an unchangeable fact of your job search.

You can absolutely take strong steps to overcome age bias and get a GREAT job…not just A job.

You Bring Advantages to the Job

You can sell your age and experience as a bonus–if you do it in the right way. Telling them you have more than 25 years of experience won’t cut it.

One of the prime opportunities for your age to be an advantage is your resume, with some smart editing. No matter how much experience you have, your resume should be no more than 2 pages–unless you’re a published author or C-level executive.

Job Search Smarter, Not Harder

You need to be strategic in which companies or employers you pursue for jobs. Certain companies will be harder for you to get into because they favor hiring younger and promoting from within.

Ace the Interview

You need to know the biases that employers tend to have against older job seekers and take active steps to address them in the interview.

You need to show your energy, drive, and strategic thinking born of your experience with a 30-60-90-day plan in the interview.
