architectureArchitecture is an enticing career path. It is not only lucrative, it is also well respected. An architect has the luxury of knowing that the demand is always there. If there’s one thing we can guarantee in the future, it’s that we will be building more than ever. As more people populate the planet and our need for space increases, we will always need architects. It’s a fine career choice, however it is not without its challenges.

Architecture requires a long degree and extensive qualifications. The job itself requires a very specific skillset. It bridges the creative, the mathematical and the scientific. If you are successful, you have a bright future ahead of you. There is plenty of variety in an architect’s job. Projects are rarely similar and there is plenty of outdoor work to keep you out of the office. So, what exactly do you need to know?

What type of architect do you want to be?

Once qualified, architects tend to specialise in a certain area. The most common, of course, is the residential architect. They oversee the design and construction of newly built homes. In some cases this will be a large project for a big development. In other cases it could be a one-time project for a single house. The other types of architect tend to specialise in public buildings. This could be anything from skyscrapers to schools to malls. There are even specialist church architects like Churches by Daniels. Each of these require specialist knowledge.

Are you creative and scientific?

Being an architect isn’t simply about drawing a beautiful house. It is about understanding every single aspect of the building process. Of course, beautiful design is revered and sought after in the architecture world. However, there are other aspects to consider. They must take into account the functionality of the design. It must complement the surroundings and work with the existing materials. They must take into account the needs of the electricians and the plumbers. Most importantly, they must work with impeccable detail and precision when it comes to numbers. Architects are gifted mathematicians as well as artists.

Are you a good communicator?

As mentioned above, architects work on every aspect of the build. They must explain the design to the bricklayers, the electricians and the window fitters. Everyone consults the architect when there is a question. Architects must be able to articulate their vision with clarity and direction.

What qualifications do you need?

To practice architecture you must complete a specific architecture degree. They are typically five years long and include a period of work experience in the field. It is also good practice to bolster this degree with minors in art and maths. Once you have graduated, you’ll need to sit an exam in the state you intend on practicing. Much like the law Bar exam, you require a license to work in any particular state.

Most importantly, never stop drawing. Never stop being creative and coming up with new ideas. You can learn the maths and science, but creativity comes from within. If you think you have what it takes to be an architect, go forth and never look back!
