We can’t help everyone,
but everyone can help someone.
~ Ronald Reagan
Not only is this a great quote to remember in our everyday lives, it’s great advice for our careers, too.
Mentoring is a wonderful thing you can provide for others. Lots of people need a mentor but are afraid to ask. When you mentor someone, not only are you helping them, you are developing leadership skills for yourself. If your company has a mentoring program, volunteer for it. If they don’t, maybe you can start one.
Remember, mentoring doesn’t have to be a formal event–it can just be lunch, coffee, or a quick phone call. What is really a small effort for you can turn out to be a big deal for someone else, and I think that will always come back to you in the end.
