Job Search mistakesThere are 7 big job search mistakes you could be making that are keeping you from getting hired.

Mistake #1 – Continuing To Fiddle With Your Resume

I know…your resume is very important, and it needs to be ‘perfect.’  But…there comes a time when you need to stop fiddling, tweaking, or otherwise adjusting it and just send it.  Do what you can to make it as good as you can and let it go.  It needs to get you an interview, and it can’t do that if you don’t send it.

Mistake #2 – Having Owner, Consultant, or Entrepreneur On Your Resume

Employers are leery of hiring someone who is used to being their own boss…the idea being, of course, that you won’t be able to play well with others when you’re not in charge.  Instead, put your actual job on your resume.  What did you do in your typical day?  Were you a photographer?  An accountant?  An engineer?  A writer?  A graphic designer?  A retail sales manager (store owner)?

Mistake #3 – Applying To Jobs Online

Job seekers applying to jobs online are exactly like cars spinning their wheels in the mud…they’re putting in a whole lot of effort but not going anywhere.  I hate to see you working so hard at something that won’t pay off.  What should you do instead?  Spend that effort finding the hiring manager and sending your resume directly to them.  That’s what gets you interviews.  If the worst happens and they tell you to go apply online, that’s OK.  At least then they’ll know your name—which puts you ahead of the rest of the crowd.

Mistake #4 – Not Doing Anything

Job searching is very hard.  There’s a lot of pressure, a lot of rejection, a lot of uncertainty.  It’s tempting to say, “I’ll do it tomorrow/Monday/when it’s sunny/after the holidays”, but you’re just prolonging the agony.  There’s no time like the present.  The faster you get started, the faster you’ll see results—and the better you’ll feel.

Mistake #5 – Relying On Your Network

Networks are important, this is true.  But no matter how big your network is, it’s probably not big enough to yield the number of opportunities you need.  Use your network, AND go outside of it to hiring managers in your space.  Look for them on LinkedIn and Facebook and corporate websites.

Mistake #6 – Thinking That Because You Are (Too Old, Too Young, Too Experienced, Too Inexperienced, Out Of Work Too Long….) You Can’t Get A Job

Not true.  For every story you can tell me about why it can’t happen for you, I have 10 or 20 or 100 stories about people just like you who have done it.  All you need are the skills to find the right hiring manager and show why you would be valuable to them.  That’s what Career Confidential is for.

Mistake #7 – Not Using Career Confidential To Help You In Your Job Search
